In 2003, a small blog post from Dr Alan Greene made a big difference in the field of child care. We, at the Cuddles Childcare Centre of Perth, would take notice and would always remember the importance of exercise in children of all ages.
Dr Greene referred to a study on baby aerobics that was performed on premature babies. Premature babies often suffer from physical developmental problems based on leaving the womb too early. The standard method of treating a premature baby was to leave them still, make sure they got plenty of nutrition and monitor them.
Unfortunately, this often resulted in deterioration of bone strength which would not be addressed until the child was old enough to start moving on its own. The baby aerobics study was performed on babies who were delivered an average of three months before they were “due.”
Instead of lying still, the babies were exercised five times a week for five minutes a day, when their limbs were put through a series of passive movements. The control group was another group who was given contract and stroking for the same amount of time. This was to see if personal touch influenced bone strength, or if the passive movements would have an effect.
The results? The babies who were moved showed significantly more development in bone strength and density than those in the control group. The main takeaway from this study was that exercise is a very powerful tool for physical development, even in premature babies.
There are many documented benefits of physical exercise. These include stronger bones and muscles, a leaner body and less chance of obesity or type 2 diabetes. In addition, anecdotal evidence shows a strong link between exercise and lowered cholesterol, lower blood pressure and a lower resting heart rate.
At Cuddles Childcare Centre in Perth, exercise is a standard part of your child’s day. Inspired by Dr Greene, we do baby aerobics. We also ensure that toddlers and all children get plenty of exercise through play. This means that exercise is fun, because the child never knows they are “exercising”; they just play and have a great time.
