At our child care centres in the Perth area, we are big on ensuring your child’s safety. One of the essentials is a first aid kit. Many parents don’t have a first aid kit but have a fully-stocked medicine chest. Sometimes, this can result in children taking medications that are not appropriate for them and can result in harm. Here are some dos and don’ts for children’s first aid.
Know Your Over the Counter Medications
There are a lot of over the counter medications that are dangerous to give to a child. In addition, some parents continue to treat children with over the counter medications when what they really need is a doctor. If your child has a fever, give them a small dose of aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen. If the fever persists, take the child to a doctor. Remember that first aid is for first aid: not habitual use.
Don’t Play Doctor
Some parents give their children medications that have been prescribed to someone else. This can endanger your child for numerous reasons. Don’t ever give a child prescription medicine that was prescribed to someone else, especially an adult.
Side Effects
Always be on the watch for side effects and allergies. These can have tragic consequences, especially if not addressed immediately. If your child shows allergic reactions to a medicine, call a doctor immediately.
Don’t Give Multiple Medicines to Your Child
Don’t give more than one medicine at a time to your child. You are risking drug interactions that can be harmful and even fatal. Also, one medicine may work against another. Let the doctor decide if your child needs two medicines.
Store All Medicines in the Original Container under Lock and Key
Throw out Expired or Unused Medicines
Don’t Use Alcohol as a Home Remedy
This can be extremely dangerous to your child.
