Our childcare centres in Perth have a lot of organised activities for preschoolers that are in accordance with our philosophy of learning through play. However, we are often asked by parents about activities that their toddlers can do at home to stay busy and occupied while learning.
We are fully aware that handling your toddler can be a challenge. Generally, they have a lot of energy and short attention spans. We have come up with some home activities that will occupy them for around ten minutes at a time and sometimes longer.
Toddlers love sorting. Sorting “loves” them, too, as it helps them learn how to organise and differentiate. You can give them something as simple as a box of multi-coloured cereal and a muffin pan and have them sort the colours into separate “cups.” The fact that they get to eat the cereal afterwards is a nice “reward” for the child.
A combination as simple as chopped fruit, cream cheese and graham crackers can result in edible art projects. This stimulates creativity as well as motor skills.
Rotate the Toys
Only allow your child to have a fixed number of toys at their disposal at any given time. Put the others away. Then, rotate the toys on a regular basis by introducing new ones and removing some of the old ones. They will seem like new toys to the child, who will have forgotten about them. A note of caution: don’t “put away” their favourite toys.
Match the Lids
Clean and save brightly-coloured plastic containers for foods such as mustard and ketchup, then encourage your child to put the lids back onto the containers. Make a game out of it and congratulate them for every success.
Think Outside of the Square
Any activity that encourages your child to think, use motor skills or create is helping them learn while they play. Call Cuddles Childcare Centres for more suggestions to help your child learn.
