In every Cuddles Childcare Centre in the Perth area, we offer Jolly Phonics as a way to help kids get a head start on writing. The program is so much fun that they don’t even realise it’s work. That is because we are so committed to the Early Years Learning Framework concept of Learning Through Play.
But did you know there are a lot of things you can do at home to give your child a head start on writing? Here are a few of them.
Display Your Child’s Writing in a Prominent Place
When your child starts to write, find a special place, like the refrigerator or a special wall, and display the writing there. Take a picture of it and show it to the grandparents. This tells your child that his or her writing is something you are proud of and that it is worthy of sharing and bragging about.
Write in Front of Your Child and Ask for Help
Write something like a shopping list in front of your child, then ask what else you should put on it. You can do this with emails to relatives. This gives your child the shared experience of writing with you.
Have Your Child Dictate Stories
Have your child tell you a story. Write it all down. Read it to your child afterwards. Have them draw pictures about the story. Your child will want to do the writing as soon as they can learn. A little bit of motivation goes a long way.
Create a small area for your child to write and call it his or her office. Supply it with pens, pencils, paper and other office supplies. It will make your child feel “grown up” and like the writing is important. It also makes it more fun and easier to write.
