At all Cuddles Childcare Centres serving Perth suburbs such as Baldivis, our motto is “Learning Through Play.” We take that motto and mission seriously. Due to our many programs, such as Jessie’s Art Time, Messy Play, Jolly Phonics, Happy Feet Fitness and relaxed play periods, we have become very successful at fulfilling that mission.
Consequently, we are often asked by parents how they can help their children learn through play while they are at home. Here are some ideas.
While we take our mission seriously, it doesn’t mean play has to actually be serious. If you are playful with your child and provide a playful environment, it can help you bond with your child while encouraging healthy habits. Don’t worry about what the child is or isn’t learning. Children learn a lot while just doing something that seems simple to you.
If your backyard isn’t large enough, take your child to a park or playground. You want your child to have room to run, jump and climb playground equipment. Always make sure the equipment is safe for a child your child’s age to play on. Playing games with your child or doing something like making an obstacle course for you to go through together is great. Your child learns to solve problems and think on their own.
Playing games with your child is also a great way for them to learn critical learning and thinking skills. Hide and seek, hopscotch and games where you imitate animals are perfect.
Give your child opportunities to create imaginary objects. Building blocks can be used to create cars, trains, houses or animals. Let your child paint with watercolours.
There are a lot of games that help your child learn to count. Any game that has points in it is wonderful. You can also walk with your child and count mailboxes, red cars, dogs or anything else you want to count.
