Jolly Phonics is arguably the world’s number one approach to teaching literacy to children. It identifies the 42 letter sounds and uses a multi-sensory approach to teaching the sounds to children. Teachers and children alike find the program more motivating, inspiring and effective than the traditional “learning by rote” method.
Why do so many schools teach Jolly Phonics? The short answer is because it works. Another reason is that it is fun to both teach and learn. Students are taught what their “Jolly Learning” website refers to as the “five key skills” that go into learning to read and write.
The Five Key Skills
Learning Letter Sounds
Children learn the 42 letter sounds of the English language. They include the standard, one-letter alphabet sounds and two-letter “digraphs” such as ue, ai, th and sh.
Children learn how to form and then how to write the letters, using an approach that incorporates all of the senses.
Children learn how to combine the sounds with each other to form, read and write words.
Children learn how to listen for specific sounds. This helps them prepare to learn how to spell.
Tricky or abnormally pronounced words are learned separately. This keeps children from being confused.
Some Schools that Teach Jolly Phonics
All three of our Cuddles Childcare Centre locations in the Perth area are near schools that teach Jolly Phonics. The Carlisle and St James locations are near East Victoria Park Primary School, while the Bertram location is near the Bertram Primary School. This is great for both us and the schools involved because we get an opportunity to help children prepare to attend the schools close to us.
Most children who come to Cuddles and participate in Jolly Phonics have a “head start” when attending either of these primary schools or any school that teaches Jolly Phonics. Even in schools that don’t, a child with a Jolly Phonics background has a better foundation for learning to read and write than one who hasn’t tried Jolly Phonics.
The best part: they learn to read while playing..
