Years and years of providing child care for families in Wattle Grove and other Perth suburbs have taught us the value of positive guidance for preschoolers. We have learned from experience that positive guidance is the best way to help preschoolers grow, develop and get along with their peers.
It may be tempting to yell at your child, but it is usually more productive to provide calm, positive guidance.
What is Positive Guidance?
Ideally, you will react to every situation with the intention of furthering development and guiding your child’s behaviour. It is often most effective to reframe a situation instead of tackling it head on. Whenever possible, punishment should be replaced with responses to events that actually help your child modify their behaviour and control themselves.
This process can be slow, but it always results in growth if you have enough patience. It might not always result in an immediate resolution or immediate change, but there will be growth, even if it is what seems like miniscule increments.
Guiding Your Toddler
Toddlers are best guided by setting limits. These should start out as simple limits like no jumping on the couch or no splashing in the bathtub. Redirecting bad behaviour into good behaviour is especially productive in toddlers.
Guiding Your Preschoolers
One of the most effective ways to guide a preschooler is to provide an effective framework in which to make her own decisions. For example, offer a choice of two outfits for school and let her choose one. You should always let children experience the consequences of their decisions so they are able to make the connection between cause and effect.
Remember, though: intervention will obviously be necessary to protect your child from a harmful consequence.
