If there’s anything our years of experience providing day care in the Perth area has taught us, it’s that quality time with children is the most important time you can ever spend. We have dedicated our lives to day care and we are the best at relating to children and making them happy. But ultimately, the responsibility for raising a healthy child falls upon the parents.
The best way for parents to raise happy children is to spend as much quality time with them as possible. For babies and toddlers, parents are their world. Parents are children’s main role models. Children start emulating their parents as babies. They also want as much time and approval as possible from their parents, especially their mothers.
Informal studies indicate that quality time with parents is an important part of a child’s future academic behaviour, achievement and emotional well-being. We think it’s just common sense that happier children will perform better later in life. Day care personnel can make a difference, but parents are even more important to a child’s emotional growth and wellbeing. Here are some ways to spend quality time with your child.
Daily Connect Time
Have a daily time that you connect with your child. It is preferable to do it in person. But if you don’t always have as much time as you want, it can be helpful to establish daily routines. If you set time aside every day, it can make a huge difference in your child’s life.
Ask any pastor or minister: rituals are powerful. If you have a ritual you can perform with your child every day, it can go a long way toward making your time together special. For example, reading a book to your child at bedtime until he or she begins to fall asleep is a great ritual. Having a special time when your child tells you about his or her day is another good idea.
I Love You
Childhood is a special time, but it doesn’t last forever. Make sure to take advantage of every opportunity to say “I love you” to your child. Make sure your child knows he or she is important to you. There is no such thing as saying “I love you” to your child too much.
Reinforce Positive Behaviour
Whenever your child does anything good, make sure to say something about it. Let your child know how much you appreciate the good behaviour. Other than “I love you,” nothing feels better to a child than words of appreciation.
Eat With Your Child
Always try to eat with your child for as many mealtimes or snack times as possible. If it makes a difference, have quick snacks or mini-meals on hand so you can enjoy them with your child. It’s a great time to “check in” and talk about your child’s day.
Schedule regular activities with your child that they choose. Even once a week on the weekend is enough to encourage bonding and make memories with your child. One important caveat: always, always follow through. Don’t let your child down once you have scheduled an activity. Remember that you are your child’s main role model. Role model following through, not disappointment.
Anytime Can Be Playtime
Play with your child whenever possible. This can be done while driving to day care or while giving your child a bath. Every bit of time you play is beneficial to your child.
Don’t Forget to Laugh
Laugh and be silly with your child as much as possible. They can be serious later in life. Childhood is a time to laugh and play. Don’t deprive your child of this valuable emotional resource.
Turn off the computer, mobile phone, TV, etc when you are spending time with your child. Don’t let technology interfere with what you and your child may remember later as the best times of your lives.
