In any childcare centre in Wellard or any Perth suburb, carers see plenty of tantrums from children. By necessity, we have become adept at responding to them in a way that is efficient in stopping the tantrums. We like to respond gently but firmly. Here are some helpful hints for responding to tantrums.
Why do Tantrums Happen?
Tantrums may be the most common in children from 1 to 3 years old. They haven’t yet developed the social or coping skills that they will develop in later years. They don’t yet have vocabulary to express what is inside of them emotionally. They find themselves straddling a fence where Independence on is on one side and separation from you is on the other.
Most of all though, many find out that throwing a tantrum is an easy way to get what they want. Older children also have tantrums, but it is usually because they still haven’t developed the skills to manage negative situations properly.
A child’s temperament might be the main determinant in whether or not they throw a tantrum. Tantrums can easily be stimulated by outside conditions such as hunger, tiredness, stress and overstimulation. Children also tend to throw Tantrums when they have no other way of coping with a situation, such as when another child steals their toy and walks away. Strong emotions such as fear, anger, shame and worry can also cause tantrums.
How to Stop Tantrums
One of the best ways to stop Tantrums is to reduce your child’s stress. It is also helpful to tune into your child’s feelings so you can nip a tantrum in the bud. Often, just talking to your child about feelings that are about to bring on an episode will provide them an outlet and keep them from throwing a tantrum.
It is also helpful to identify things that trigger Tantrums in your child. But probably the best remedy is to talk to your child often about emotions and concerns. Let them know you care.
How to Respond to Tantrums
When your child has a tantrum, stay calm. Acknowledge your child’s feelings. Then, just wait out the tantrum. Make sure that your approach to tantrums is always calm and consistent.
