Play is an essential part of any day care program in the Perth area and beyond and it comes in many different forms. We, at Cuddles child care centre in the Perth area, believe that play is an effective tool for toddlers and young children to learn and develop. In fact, we have incorporated an incredible learning experience for your children—through Messy Play.
The Appeal of Messy Play
What we call “Messy Play” is the usage of unconventional and untidy items in a playful fashion. Essentially, the children play, in a guided way from our educators, with things like clay, sand and paint. This may seem like just messy fun, but it is actually very beneficial to the young children who engage in it.
Toddlers and children of this age are very tactile and substances such as sand or paint are unique and stimulating to them. This is one main reason why we engage in messy play—to stimulate their senses in a fun yet profoundly healthy way.
In addition to stimulation, messy play has a number of other beneficial effects on children. This kind of play has been shown to increase fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, which is especially true with activities like finger painting.
Play, especially the messy kind, has a positive effect on the mental well-being of the child too. For toddlers, playing and having fun is their “work.” Just as adults need to work to feel fulfilled; children need to play to satiate that need.
The Best Kind of Play
Messy play is one of the recommended educational tools, at least in our child care centres in Perth, because it has a number of positive impacts on the child. It is not only engaging, but it also improves motor skills, promotes a positive psyche and stimulates young and discovering senses.
